A major new consultation opened today which finds the City of Edinburgh Council seeking views on whether Spaces for People improvements for walking, cycling and wheeling made during the COVID pandemic should be kept longer term.

The survey closes on Monday 5th April at midnight.

Among the changes in Corstorphine have been the addition of more space around school entrances and some roads near schools closed off to through-traffic, St. John’s Road has had extended rubber kerbs added to allow pedestrians and those in wheelchairs to give each other more space, and automatic traffic lights have been added along the street.

Low Traffic Corstorphine fully supports the move to make the temporary measures permanent while recognising that the current set-up isn’t perfect for everyone in the area. That’s why we’ll be submitting our own feedback to the Council and recommend everyone with an interest in a safer, healthier Corstorphine does the same.

Once the Council has decided whether to keep any measures on a trial or permanent basis, they will follow the normal legal processes for Experimental Traffic Regulation Orders (ETRO) or Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO). This will include an opportunity for residents, businesses and stakeholders to comment and formally object.

Some further changes we’re keen to see include:

  • School Streets being introduced around all our local primary schools.
  • The elimination of pavement parking, via better designed street spaces and enforcement.
  • More dropped kerbs to help people with accessibility needs and parents with pushchairs to get around safely and more easily.
  • The installion of a segregated cycleway along the A8, allowing residents to cycle safely from the Maybury roundabout along Glasgow Road/St. John’s Road/Corstorphine Road to Roseburn.
