We were disappointed to learn this week that the City of Edinburgh Council (CEC) is pausing the development of their plans for a Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) in East Craigs.
In a statement, CEC explained that it has decided to put LTN plans for East Craigs on hold after a majority of respondents reported, during the initial engagement phase in February/March 2021, that traffic levels and speeds were not a significant issue on most residential streets in the area.
They have advised that they recognise that there are issues with high traffic volumes on selected streets and plan to progress further discussion on targeted traffic reduction with the East Craigs community at a later date. A report on the next steps for East Craigs will be presented to Edinburgh Council’s Transport and Environment Committee in the near future.
The consultation data shows that a majority of journeys are taken to local amenities as either driver or passenger in a car. With huge new housing developments in Cammo, West Craigs and beyond due to bring in excess of 10,000 new homes to the area, congestion and rat running will only increase in East Craigs. We know that LTNs encourage modal shift and would go some way to reducing the amount of traffic coming to the area.
Low Traffic Corstorphine will continue to push for solutions to the ever-increasing dominance of vehicles and their negative effects in West Edinburgh. We will also be supporting the planned Corstorphine Connections LTN which is now being consulted on.
